All pictures in the slide show are related to the Bovenkerk in the City of Kampen. 'Boven' means 'upper' and 'Kerk' is a church. The Bovenkerk is therfore the 'Upper Church' in the Dutch City of Kampen, approximately 40 miles to the East-North-East of Amsterdam.
The Bovenkerk is one of the biggest churches in the Netherlands. Remarkable when one considers it never was more than a parish church. But dedicated to St. Nicolaas, patron saint of sailors, its prestige was directly connected to that of Kampen itself, at that time the most important port of the northern Netherlands.
